Marycare Health Centre Ejemekwuru Official Opening

The official opening of the Marycare Health Centre took place on 12th January 2015, the ceremony was performed by Hon Kingsley Uju, Deputy Chief of Staff, Imo State Government in honor of Her Excellency Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha, wife of the Governor of Imo State. The Chairman of the occasion was Chief Hartley Egbulefu, Managing Director of Heins Nigeria Ltd. The Master of Ceremony was Barrister Basil Nwoke, an indigene of Ejemekwuru.

The ceremony started with a prayer service officiated by 3 Catholic priests, namely Rev Fr. Emmanuel Ihemedu, Rev. Msgr. Anslem Nworgu and the parish priest of St Peter’s Parish Ejemekwuru, Rev Fr. Sabinus Ikea. Rev Fr Longinus Chinagorom was also present. Delivering his homily during the service, Fr. Emmanuel took time to tell the story of how he was able to survive overseas through divine assistance rendered to him by people who had not known him. He therefore decided within himself that he must help others. He concluded by saying that at the end of his life time here on earth, he would like people to remember him by talking about what he did to touch their hearts and change their lives, how he made a difference in their lives. At the end of the service, Msgr. Nworgu blessed the people and sprinkled holy water on them as well as inside and outside the health centre building.

Delivering his address of welcome at the very colourful event, the President of the Local Board of Directors of Marycare Ejemekwuru, Sir Paschal O.J. Ihemedu, welcomed her Excellency's representative and appreciated her acceptance of the invitation.

He enumerated the ways Marycare Inc. USA had been helping the people of Ejemekwuru through various projects namely - provision of portable water for Umuoduwa Ejemekwuru, scholarship to over 160 students in secondary schools before the advent of the free education policy of the Okorocha administration, interest free micro loan to women, palm plantation and oil mill, peanut project, medical mission, introduction of moringa seeds, the health centre project and the proposed Skills Acquisition Project (SAP). He expressed gratitude to Marycare Inc. for caring for a people they have only known through their son Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Ihemedu. He also expressed his appreciation of the selfless efforts put in by the members of the Local Board of Directors in seeing that the projects were properly executed.

He called on the State Government to come to their aid especially as the health centre was providing free treatment to the people of Ejemekwuru  and others. He specifically called for the posting of NYSC (National Youth Service Corps) doctors to the health centre and provision of additional structures to help accommodate expected equipment for the health centre.

In his response, Hon Kingsley Uju appreciated the gesture of Marycare Inc. all the way from the US to help our people. Hon. Uju promised that government will build a surgical theatre at the health centre. In addition he directed that requests be made in writing, for the posting of NYSC doctors to the health centre and for partnership with the Imo foundation as a referral centre.

In attendance were Justice Anwuka, wife of the Minister of State for Education, Prof Tony Anwuka, Dr. C.A. Duruji, a former commissioner of education in Governor Mbakwe’s regime, Sir Justice Ohaegbu, Director Imo State Liaison Office, Abuja and a host of other dignitaries. The people of Ejemekwuru came out en-mass to grace the occasion with their acting traditional ruler, Nze P.C. Amakor KSJ, the Eje 1 of Ejemekwuru, with his Eze – in Council. The president of Ejemekwuru Town Union, Sir Kieran Igwebuike and his cabinet as well as all traditional institutions were in attendance. Traditional dancers and ISOPADEC women were also present.
